Today, Montenegro.com takes you to another part of Montenegro that we haven't had the opportunity to present so far. Piva is located in the northwestern part of the country on the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. The entire region is recognizable for its untouched nature, dense forests and the canyons of Tara, Piva, Komarnica and Sušica, which are unique in the world. Each of these canyons has its own specific features, and their common feature is that they were created by river erosion. The most famous is the Tara river canyon, which is known for very exciting rafting, unique in the world.

The overall length of the canyon is 68 km, and the depth reaches up to 1300 meters. Considering its length, depth and other characteristics, the Tara Canyon is the second largest in the world, right after the Colorado River Canyon in the USA.

The area of Piva is sparsely populated, and the largest settlement is the small town of Plužine. This area is also known for extremely medicinal herbs, teas and local agricultural products of exceptional quality and high ecological standards.

The most famous cultural and historical monument is the Piva Monastery. Its construction began in 1573 and lasted until 1586. It was built by the Metropolitan of Herzegovina, the later Patriarch of Pec, Savatije. The Piva Monastery has an extremely rich treasury and for centuries represented the most important spiritual and cultural center of this area.
