Montenegro.com visited Mr. Marko Marković, a man who is considered one of the most famous and experienced collectors of antiques in Montenegro.

One Perper from 1914 In the conversation with Mr. Marko, we came across many interesting data. We also got the opportunity to photograph some of the most interesting exhibits of his rich collection.

Part of Marko Marković's collection Through the conversation, we learned that there is a large number of antique lovers in our area. Collectors regularly organize gatherings where they socialize and exchange the latest information relevant to this noble hobby. Mr. Marko complained to us that, unfortunately, it still happens that some precious antiquities are taken out of Montenegro without authorization. These are mostly amphorae, numismatics, philately, paintings of famous Montenegrin authors and other types of valuables of this type for which it is easy to find buyers in other areas. Fortunately, however, from year to year, such cases are becoming rarer. Also, Marko reminds us, large quantities of valuable antiques, especially furniture, were destroyed in the catastrophic earthquake of 1979. Some were destroyed in the earthquake itself, and many things were left to rot in the ruins of old houses.

It should be emphasized that in this area, Montenegro has a particularly great tradition when it comes to numismatics and philately. The wealth of our country in these items is based on the fact that Prince Nikola introduced his own currency, the famous Perper, in mint and paper form only at the beginning of the last century.

Perperi in various denominations Until then, Montenegro only used other people's coins. Such a monetary system was conditioned by the fact that today on the territory of Montenegro it is possible to find a large number of coins from various parts of the world. At that time, however, money from the immediate environment, predominantly Austro-Hungarian, was used the most. On the territory of our country there are also significant amounts of Roman money. Research was recently started in Risno, where one of the largest sites of its kind in this area is located.

"Peasant" lamps The whole of Montenegro, and especially Boka and the coastal areas, were often the targets of conquest attacks by many great powers. Each of them brought and of course left something behind. Among other things, significant amounts of valuable objects were brought by many sailors from all the meridians over the centuries on the famous sailing ships of Boke. All the listed circumstances and facts have contributed to the fact that today in Montenegro you can find various objects, from furniture to militaria, dishes, escaj, mirrors, paintings, books, photographs, postcards, to jewelry from almost all over the world.
