The town of Bar was already mentioned in the 9th century under the name Antivari/Antibari. The city is intensively referred to by this name in documents after the famous Battle of Bar (1042), when Prince Vojislav rose up against Byzantine rule. The victory over the Byzantines had the effect of making the then state of Zeta feel like a free, independent state. The son of the celebrated prince Vojislav, Mihailo, was crowned king in 1077. A century and a little later, in 1089, Bar became the seat of the archbishopric. The progenitor of the ruling house of Nemanjić, Stefan Nemanja, took the city from the hands of non-Slavs by conquest in 1183.

Not far from today's port, there is an archaeological site with the remains of the first local cathedral. It was built in the 6th century; the archbishop, who was also the builder, remains unknown to this day. The most important tourist location on the entire Bar Riviera is Stari Bar, the only one of all the coastal towns that is not located right next to the coast. This walled hill was originally inhabited by Illyrians. The settlement was abandoned in the Roman era when the center of government was moved closer to the sea. Stari Bar was the center of the state of Duklje, and since 1089 the Archbishopric has been located here. It experienced its greatest prosperity during the era of Nemanjić. In the 15th century it fell under Venetian rule. The Turks took it over in 1571 and ruled the entire area for more than 300 years. Montenegrins will take control in 1878, the year when Montenegro becomes an officially recognized state for the first time at the Congress of Berlin. The old town core of Stari Bar upwards suffered precisely from the Montenegrin soldiers, when they caused the explosion of ammunition on two occasions, in 1881 and 1912. Bar suffered an additional blow in the catastrophic earthquake of 1979.

  Today's appearance roughly dates from 1878, when Montenegrins built their main port here. At that time, the future port center was called Pristan. Only after 1976, when the Belgrade-Bar railway was built, i.e. 30 years after the Second World War, the city began to develop more intensively. Modern Bar mostly consists of modern residential buildings, without many locations that would be attractive to tourists. An exception is the Castle of King Nikola on the coast, actually a villa, not far from the port. It was built in 1885 and connected to the chapel and winter garden. The Castle is home to the City Museum, with an exhibition of, among other things, a copy of the narrow-gauge railway that connected the oldest Montenegrin railway section, the one between Bar and Virpazar, from 1908.

The park, in the center of which is the Castle, has been enhanced with several specimens of rare plants and trees that came from various parts of the world, as a gift to King Nicholas. In front of the palace itself is the City Beach, but the quality of the water is questionable due to the proximity of the port and the very urban center of this Montenegrin province. The most interesting tourist destination is actually Stari Bar, a city surrounded by ramparts, 3 km from the sea. At the foot of Mount Rumije is this picturesque urban center with a fascinating aqueduct that supplied drinking water to Stari Bar for centuries. Inside the walls are churches from the 14th and 15th centuries. - St. Catherine and St. Venerande, and in the ruins is the church of St. Nikola, which was built in 1288 by Jelena, the wife of the Serbian king Uroš I.

As the main street continues up the hill, it narrows and goes right next to the walls from the 16th century. Those walls were built by the Venetians. Until the arrival of the Venetians, the entrance gate was part of a large tower, and then a church. The relief of the Venetian lion is well preserved there. At the very entrance to the city there is the Omerbašića mosque from 1662, and the grave of the dervish Hasan, where there is also a former fountain with an inscription in Arabic nearby. The oldest walls of the Tatarović citadel date from the 10th century. From the walls of the citadel, you can clearly see the Turkish aqueduct, next to which are the remains of the church of St. Franciska with fragments of visible frescoes from the 14th century. Nearby is the inner, City Gate that leads into the very core. The main square consists of a church of modest dimensions and a two-story stone palace of the former Archdiocese of Bar. Quite a bit away from the main square, there is a square where the church of St. George, the patron saint of Bar. Visitors inspired by the walk can also see the old Turkish baths from the 18th century, the Clock Tower and the Duke's Palace.

  In the immediate vicinity of the city is the oldest olive tree in the world, as old as Christianity, over 2009 years old. The tree is surrounded by a protective fence for the reason that many people today would like to tear off its souvenir branch. The symbol of Bar is the olive tree. Just as Montenegrin prosciutto is linked by name and brand to the village of Njeguše, so olive and olive oil are linked by brand almost exclusively to Bar. The varieties here are the oldest, the most autochthonous, the most generous. Olive oil from Bar can be found throughout the year at all coastal green markets. It is considered more expensive, compared to other bottled oils in supermarkets, but it is all the better and better quality. It is unrefined, virgin clean and ecological. The Bar cultural summer is the name of a multi-genre manifestation that makes your stay fulfilling and pleasant during the season.
