Ostrog Monastery is the most visited pilgrimage site in the Balkans, drawing over a million visitors each year. Built directly into a sheer cliff face in the 17th century by Saint Vasilije Ostroški, the monastery appears to defy gravity as it clings to the rock 900 metres above the Zeta Valley. The complex consists of a lower and upper monastery, with the upper level housing two small churches containing sacred relics and vibrant frescoes. Pilgrims of all faiths visit, many believing in its miraculous healing powers.
