Danilovgrad: Черногория’s Historic Heart in the Fertile Zeta Valley
Nestled in the fertile Bjelopavlići plain along the Zeta River, Danilovgrad is a charming черногорский town that serves as a gateway to some of the country’s most significant spiritual and historical sites. Named after Prince Danilo I Petrović-Njegoš, this planned city offers visitors a unique blend of agricultural heritage, religious pilgrimage destinations, and authentic черногорский culture.
История and Origins
Founding of Danilovgrad
Danilovgrad was established as a settlement in 1863 under Prince Nikola I Petrović-Njegoš and formally named after his predecessor Prince Danilo I Petrović-Njegoš following the completion of a key bridge in 1870. [1] The town was founded with the ambitious purpose of becoming the capital of Черногория, with foundations for this planned city first laid by King Nikola I in 1870. [2]
An urban plan, drafted by engineer Dragiša Milutinović and finalized in 1869, projected capacity for 15,000 residents and included key infrastructure such as a court, senate building, prison, school, church, and a defense tower for the Zeta River bridge. [3] However, after the cities of Nikšić and Podgorica were liberated from османский control during the Congress of Berlin, Danilovgrad’s significance as the prospective capital diminished.
Prince Danilo I
The town bears the name of Danilo I Petrović-Njegoš (May 25, 1826 – August 13, 1860), who was the ruling Prince of Черногория from 1851 to 1860. [4] The beginning of his reign marked the transition of Черногория from a traditional theocratic form of government (Prince-Bishopric) into a secular Principality. During his reign, he became involved in a war with the Османская империя in 1852, with boundaries between the two countries not defined until 1858. [5] Danilo, with the help of his elder brother, Voivode Mirko, defeated the османскийs at Ostrog in 1853 and in the Battle of Grahovac in 1858.
The Bjelopavlići Clan
The Bjelopavlići is a historical tribe (pleme) of Albanian origin and a valley in the region of the Brda, in Черногория, around the city of Danilovgrad. [6] According to oral tradition, the Bjelopavlići claim to descend from a son of the medieval Albanian noble Lekë Dukagjini named Pal Bardhi (Bjelo Pavle). [7]
Following the османский conquest of Upper Zeta in 1474 and the subsequent fall of Scutari in 1479, the Bjelopavlići are mentioned as a distinct nahiyah in the 1485 defter of the newly created Sanjak of Scutari. The tribe experienced numerous conflicts with османский forces throughout the centuries, including a major uprising in 1596 that spread to neighboring regions. [8]
The Bjelopavlići tribe has been predominantly Eastern православный since at least the 17th century, with ecclesiastical oversight provided by the Metropolitanate of Zeta, a diocese of the сербский православный Church. [9] Petar I later managed to unite the Piperi and Bjelopavlići with Черногория, integrating them into the черногорский state.
География and Climate
The Bjelopavlići Plain
The town of Danilovgrad is located in the Bjelopavlići plain, a fertile valley of the Zeta River. [10] The Bjelopavlići plain, also known as the Zeta River valley, constitutes a narrow strip of fertile lowland terrain spanning approximately 160 km², with an average elevation of around 40 meters above уровень моря. [11] This plain merges with the broader Zeta Plain to the north and is characterized by its flat, arable land ideal for intensive agriculture, contrasting sharply with the encircling karst mountains that rise steeply on its peripheries.
Climate
In the Bjelopavlići plain, the influence of the средиземноморский climate is dominant, slightly modified, which means that the area is characterized by long, hot and dry summers, while winters are relatively mild and rainy. [12] Danilovgrad has a humid subtropical climate (Cfa according to the Köppen climate classification) with cool winters and hot, drier summers.
Agriculture
The Bjelopavlići Plain is known for its fertile soil, making it an agricultural hub for Черногория. [13] The plain is home to numerous vineyards and orchards, producing delicious local wines and fruits. The Bjelopavlici Plain has rich potential for agricultural practices and a suitable climate for cultivation.
Главные достопримечательности
Ostrog Monastery
The crown jewel of the Danilovgrad region is undoubtedly the Ostrog Monastery, located 15 km away in the municipality. [14] This spectacular православный monastery is one of the most frequently visited religious sites in the Балканы, attracting over 100,000 visitors annually. [15]
Architectural Marvel: The monastery is dramatically carved into an almost vertical rock face of Ostroška Greda, merging with its surroundings physically but setting itself apart visually with its bright white color. [16] The monastery was founded in the early 17th century by Vasilije Jovanović, better known as St. Basil of Ostrog, the Metropolitan of Herzegovina. [17]
Religious Significance: It is dedicated to Saint Basil of Ostrog, whose incorruptible relics rest in the Church of the Presentation. [18] When his grave was opened in 1678, the Saint appeared in a glorified body with the color of pure wax, exuding a fragrance similar to that of basil leaves. [19] The miracles at the grave of St. Basil are without number, and Christians, Muslims, and people of all faiths come before his relics and find healing of their most grave illnesses and afflictions. [20]
Pilgrimage Traditions: Every year, more than 100,000 visitors of Catholic, православный, and Muslim faith come to this place of worship for praise and healing. [21] It is traditional for pilgrims to walk the 3 km from the lower monastery to the upper monastery barefoot, and before entering the Church of the Presentation to pray before Saint Basil of Ostrog, pilgrims make a donation of clothing, blankets or consumables like soap for the monks. [22]
Ždrebaonik Monastery
The monastery Ždrebaonik is located just 2 km from Danilovgrad on the left side of the Zeta River, in the peaceful Bjelopavlici plain. [23] The monastery, the church of Rodjenje Presvete Bogorodice (Birth of the Holy Mother of God), was raised by Sveti Stefa Piperski (St. Stephen from Piperi) in 1637. [24]
This small, beautiful monastery is a female monastery and a peaceful and serene place to visit. [25] The renewal of the monastery began in 1994, and there are ongoing plans to connect the monasteries of Ostrog and Ždrebaonik with a direct road. [26]
Morača Monastery
Located near the banks of the Morača River, about 46 km from Podgorica, the Morača Monastery is one of the most important православный monasteries in Черногория. [27] Founded in 1252 by Stefan Nemanja, son of king Vukašin, this church was built in the Raščan style. [28]
The main sanctuary (katholikon) is a large one-nave church, and the monastery complex includes the Synod church Uspenja Bogorodice (Falling into Sleep of Holy Mother of God), a small church of Sveti Nikola (St. Nicolas), as well as sleeping quarters. [29] The Morača painting school is considered to be one of the greatest achievements of византийский art. [30] The Church of the Dormition features external frescoes by the celebrated master Đorđe Mitrofanović, plus beautiful doors inlaid with geometric patterns.
Doclea (Duklja) Roman Ruins
Near present-day Podgorica, only three kilometers away, lie the ancient ruins of Doclea (also known as Duklja), the most significant archaeological site in the territory of Черногория. [31] The city was built in the 1st century AD on a plateau near the confluence of the Zeta and Morača rivers and was a large town with 8-10 thousand inhabitants. [32]
Around 300 AD, Doclea became the capital of the newly established Roman province, Prevalis, with a population of some 40,000. [33] The site served as an important administrative and military center, evidenced by the remains of public buildings, including temples, basilicas, and baths. The Forum with a Basilica, the temples of Diana and Roma, the town spas, the urban villas, the ramparts and many other architectural edifices can still be seen at the site. [34]
The site is being considered for UNESCO World Heritage status and offers free entry to visitors. [35] After the 4th century, it lost power, and in the beginning of the 5th century, it was attacked by the Visigoths. In 518, it was totally destroyed by an earthquake, and finally, in the 7th century AD, after the invasion of the Avar-Slavic tribes, Doclea lost its urban characteristics.

[40] Visitors can embark on an e-bike adventure through the pristine beauty of mountain Studeno to the idyllic Srednja Ponikvica Lake. The Bjelopavlici Plain is a tranquil expanse of nature offering serene walks or bicycle rides. [41]
Скадарское озеро Национальный парк
A stone’s throw from Danilovgrad lies Скадарское озеро Национальный парк, the largest lake in Southern Europe. [42] Two-thirds of Скадарское озеро is in Черногория and the rest is in Albania. The lake has been a protected Национальный парк since 1983 and was added, in 1996, to the World’s List of Wetlands of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention. [43]
The park covers an area of 40,000 hectares, making it one of the biggest национальный паркs in Черногория. [44] Скадарское озеро is one of the largest bird reserves in Europe, having 270 bird species, among which are some of the last pelicans in Europe. [45] It is abundant in fish, especially in carp, bleak and eel, and of the 34 native fish species, 7 are endemic to Скадарское озеро.
Wine Tourism
Plantaže Vineyard
Plantaže is the largest single vineyard in Europe, located in the heart of Podgorica. [46] The estate spans an impressive 2,300 hectares in Ćemovsko polje, a unique terroir shaped by a средиземноморский climate, limestone soils, and over 2,500 hours of sunshine each year. [47] On more than 2,000 hectares of vineyards, Plantaže cultivates 28 different grape varieties, including internationally recognized names and indigenous черногорский treasures like Vranac, Kratošija, Krstač, Malvasia, and Žižak.
Wine Tours: The Power of terroir wine tour at Plantaže’s iconic Šipčanik Wine Cellar offers a guided journey through one of Europe’s largest underground wine spaces. [48] The Šipčanik Wine Cellar is a 356-meter underground former military hangar, now housing over 2 million liters of wine. Professional guides teach visitors about the unique черногорский terroir, winemaking history, and Plantaže’s production process, followed by a guided tasting of premium wines, perfectly paired with local delicacies. [49]
Tours include an exclusive gift of a special edition wine from the Šipčanik cellar, not available for purchase. The wine cellar is located approximately 10 km from the center of Podgorica.
Vranac: Черногория’s Signature Wine
Vranac is a red grape variety that originates from Черногория, and it is the most planted grape variety in Черногория. [50] The most prevalent variety, Vranac, represents more than 70% of domestic wine production. [51]
Vranac is thought to be an ancient variety, and evidence suggests that it has been planted in the hilly landscape of Черногория since the Middle Ages. [52] Interestingly, research has shown that the parents of Vranac are Kratošija (which is the same as Tribidrag, Zinfandel, and Primitivo) and Duljenga, two old varieties tracing their roots back to Черногория. [53]
Vranac produces dense, deeply-colored red wines with flavors and aromas which range from sour cherry, blackberry and blackcurrant to chocolate, mint and vanilla. [54] High tannin content and good levels of acidity make Vranac wines key contenders for oak aging.
Agricultural Tourism
Danilovgrad is part of the central region of Черногория, which includes the capital Podgorica and the historical capital Cetinje. The region is known for various agricultural products including fruit and vegetables grown in the Zeta valley, which is the most fertile area in Черногория. [55]
Donkey Farm in Martinići
A notable agricultural tourism destination in the Danilovgrad area is the Donkey Farm in Martinići. [56] The property includes a family house, donkey farm with stable and pen, an information center, a small garden where they grow organic fruits and vegetables, and a small vineyard. Depending on the season, guests can enjoy various activities including agricultural works, milking donkeys, preparing food for donkeys, and traditional food preparation. [57]
Saveljić Family Farm
The Saveljić family’s farm in Gradina is another excellent example of agricultural tourism, where the family has lived for centuries and continues to work in agriculture while also offering ecotourism services, including professional bird watching. [58]
Rural Tourism Organization
The Rural Tourism Association “Tourism in Villages” is an organization that gathers agricultural households from all over Черногория who offer tourism services. [59] It was established with the intention to grow and improve the rural tourism sector and help families in rural agricultural areas make additional incomes.
